Convert Markdown to EPUB on an iPhone or iPad.

An e‑book from a Markdown file, or from a folder of chapter files, made on the phone. It opens in Apple Books, goes to a Kindle, and Kobo gets its own format.

The steps

  1. Add the file. Bindery opens the system document picker, so you can pick a .md file from Files, iCloud Drive, or any other provider your phone shows there. Add several and they are joined, in the order you set.
  2. Choose the format. EPUB, or KEPUB if the book is going to a Kobo.
  3. Tap Convert. The whole conversion runs on the device; a network makes no difference to it.
  4. Share it, or save it to Files. From here on it is an ordinary document that any other app can open.

What you get

  • An EPUB 3 with both kinds of navigation: the modern nav document and the older NCX, so a reader made ten years ago finds the chapters as well as one made last year.
  • One chapter per file when you add several, in the order you set, with links between them intact.
  • Diagrams and equations as pictures, drawn on the phone, so they show on any reader.
  • Code that keeps its colours.

Which e‑reader, which format

  • Apple Books opens the EPUB straight from the share sheet.
  • Kindle takes the EPUB. Amazon stopped accepting the old .mobi format in 2022, which is why Bindery does not write one.
  • Kobo: choose KEPUB, Kobo's own flavour of EPUB. For anything else, choose EPUB.

Nothing you convert leaves the phone

The converter is inside the app. It works with the network off, and an unpublished manuscript never touches a server. That is the reason Bindery exists; the privacy policy says the rest.
